ROURAL TOURISM

Less than two decades ago, a new branch of tourism appeared which is different, alternative and complementary to the typical “sun and beach” choice. The new sector’s main attractions are nature, traditional culture and various levels of adventure with nature being the main destination.

Montanejos The rural tourist feels invited to take part in the life of every town, rediscovering the appreciation for its native things. With consideration, this type of tourism has become the safety net for the small inland towns. At the end of each day, the traveller can rest in any of the houses, inns, farms, hotels, cabins, refuges and camp sites that have resuscitated inland Castellón, thanks to the community’s promptness in acting on new challenges.

Nevertheless, all the wit and long term vision would have been useless if it had not been for Castellón’s privileged natural patrimony. The area between Els Ports and the Maestrat regions includes natural landscapes and monumental towns such as Morella or Sant Mateu. L’Alcalatén region is presided over by a true symbol, the massif of Penyagolosa.

At its foot there is an area full of ancient customs. Other towns are l’Alcora, Atzeneta, Benafigos, El Magranar, Vistabella and Xodos. The Alto Mijares region articulates around the river of the same name and is an ideal area for the tourist seeking sport and health choices.

A visit to Ribesalbes and Montanejos is recommended. Finally, water is the landscape of the Alto Palencia region’s central element, together with its important historical and artistic patrimony and with Segorbe as its greatest exponent. Other interesting towns are: Castellnovo, Altura, Navajas and Bejís.

Sant Mateu También destacan municipios con todo el sabor rural como Ballestar, Catí, Ares del Maestre, Benassal o Albocàsser, entre otros; La comarca de l’Alcalatén se nos presenta presidida por todo un símbolo, el omnipresente macizo del Penyagolosa, de 1.813 metros de altitud, a cuyos pies se extiende un entorno rural lleno de costumbres ancestrales. Entre otros municipios, destacan l’Alcora, corazón alfarero, y las villas de Atzeneta, Benafigos, El Magranar, Vistabella y Xodos; el Alto Mijares se articula en torno al río del mismo nombre, en un espacio ideal para el turismo de naturaleza, deportivo y de salud.

Se recomienda la visita a municipios como Ribesalbes y Montanejos, población esta elegida por numerosos veraneantes desde el siglo xviii, atraídos por sus aguas termales y sus paisajes; el Alto Palancia, por último, tiene en el agua el elemento central de su paisaje, junto con un importante patrimonio histórico-artístico, con la monumental Segorbe como principal exponente. Otros municipios de interés son: Castellnovo, Altura, Navajas y Bejís.

En este marco incomparable es posible, además, disfrutar de actividades como el senderismo, las rutas en bicicleta de montaña, los paseos a caballo, el barranquismo, la escalada, e incluso iniciarnos en los talleres de artesanía.
