WHAT TO DO IN ALMERIA?

There are few provinces in Spain that offer as great a variety of activities as Almeria. Historic, culturally preserved and home to the most diverse landscape within the whole of Europe, Almeria is an idyllic place to explore, rest and practice your favourite pastime.

Given there is so much to see and do in Almeria it is impossible to cover them all, but here is an introduction to some of the more popular and sought after activities.

ACTIVE ALMERIA

Biking

Mountain Bikes Whether your preferred method of biking is by bicycle, dirt bike or street bike, Almeria is crossed with hundreds of breathtaking scenic routes on both paved and unpaved roads. Biking is extremely popular in the area due to the constant sunshine and warm weather making it possible to practice throughout the year and nearly everyday. The more popular routes are those that run through the Sierra Nevada and Sierra Maria – Los Velez mountains as well as those along the Mediterranean Sea.

Senderismo

Senderismo

Senderismo is the Spanish word for trekking and consists of leisurely hikes through rural or mountainous paths that are used connect one village to the next. This is a playful activity that does not require special physical training nor is it limited by age. Senderismo is enjoyed by many because it provides the opportunity to take in the beauty of nature while discovering the history, customs, archaeology and gastronomy of Almería´s small villages…sometimes in places where the progress of modern day has never arrived.

              Golf

Here are some of the more sought after courses:

Almerimar Golf: Almerimar Golf is situated in the middle of a rapidly growing seaside tourist resort, which offers plenty of facilities for the active tourist. Almerimar Golf is a course with wide fairways, large fast greens and plenty of water hazards. The green of the challenging par three 12th is settled in the middle of a lake, acquiring a tee shot that must carry at least a 100 metres of water. Almerimar Golf, opened in 1976 and designed by Golf legend Gary Player, is a popular American-style golf course with rich, mature vegetation.

Playa Serena Club de Golf: Playa Serena Golf was founded in 1979 and designed by Angel Gallardo and Peter Alliss. The golf course has a flat character as it is located straight at the beach approximately 5 kilometres west of Roquetas de Mar. Plenty of natural water hazards and bunkers, protecting the small and mostly undulated greens, make this course a true challenge and provides a fair test for all levels of play. Palms, pine trees and acacias surround the golf course. Playa Serena Golf is a private golf course but green fee players are welcome when booking in advance.

Desert Springs Golf: The Desert Springs Golf Course is the first true Arizona, California (Palm Springs) style desert Golf Course in Europe. The golf course has been built to the full USGA specifications. The Desert Springs Golf Club is an outstanding test, yet suitable for all levels of ability as fairways have been kept generously wide but the springs, watercourses, dry river beds, rocks, thousands of cacti and numerous bunkers will also test the skills of the low handicapper. The 18-hole 'Indiana' golf course opened in 2000. Another 18-holes are due to open next year. The Clubhouse, is partially built above the lake near the 18th hole and will afford the golfer a refreshing and comfortable surrounding after a round of golf on this jewel in the famous desert of Almería. If you are looking for an unique golf experience you have arrived on the right spot and the beach is only 30 minutes away from the Desert Springs Golf Club! Tee Time reservation and green fee discounts available.

La Envia Golf: The short 18 hole golf course of la Envia, designed by Francisco Mendoza, will attract people who prefer a nice, relaxed and enjoyable game of golf rather than the challenge of defeating a punishing championship golf course. Nevertheless there are a few difficult, undulated, holes at La Envia Golf which require all your skills. La Envía Golf is sited in a wide valley with new villa developments, west of the road from the N340 towards Enix between El Parador and Enixpain. You may consider to take some extra time to experience the excellent kitchen of the restaurant in the luxurious clubhouse of la Envia Golf.
